New Motorcycle Helmet Safety Ratings
New Motorcycle Helmet Safety Ratings
The Road Safety Minister has published new safety ratings for motorcycle helmets after an extra 16 models are put to the test.
Rated by the Department for Transport’s Safety Helmet Assessment and Rating Programme – SHARP – a total of 218 ratings have been published for motorcyclists’ information.
It is estimated 50 deaths could be prevented each year if all riders wore the safest helmets available on the market.
“I am delighted to be announcing new SHARP ratings today ahead of my visit to the Motorcycle Show next week,” said Mike Penning, Road Safety Minister.
“I hope that we can improve safety for motorcyclists and reduce the number of tragedies we see on the roads each year.”
Although all helmets must meet minimum legal safety standards the SHARP scheme uses more tests to provide riders with more information on the best helmets to wear while on their bike.
Their awarded ratings range between giving a helmet a safety rating of one-five stars and the performance of the helmets was shown to vary by as much as 70 percent.
They score a range of helmets where price, size and style are tested so each rider can find a helmet that is right for them.
Three of the latest batch of helmets which were scored were given the five stars rating. These were the Bell M3R, Shoei QWest and Caberg V2 407.
Best Motorcycle Helmets
A good helmet could save your life if you were to have an accident so it is important you give yourself the best possible chance by choosing the safest motorcycle helmet.
The most revolutionary motorcycle helmets on the market are ones that contain ThermaHelm technology.
A chemical reaction is triggered when the rider is involved in an accident, which causes the helmet cool the rider’s head reducing the risk of brain swelling.
Additionally, the helmet is fitted with the ability to alert, via a GPS signal, the emergency services to the location of the accident and that one has occurred.
